Did you bypass the amps at the speakers? Did you replace the wiring? Is the headunit soldered? If you left the speaker amps in place, did you get the appropriate line-level converter? I just pulled my Sony M610 in favor of a Pioneer, just because the Pioneer fell in my lap and is a higher level unit. The Sony sounded fine. They aren't competition level head units, but for the average Joe, they are find, especially given the price. Although an amp isn't really "necessary" for your install, you'll certainly get more and better sound with one. If it REALLY sounds like crap, I'd look at your current install. With that simple of an install, it can really only be head unit wiring (good connections or not), or speaker wiring (bypassing amps or not, depending on the install). I think the Sony HU has about 19-22 watts RMS per channel, which should give at least decent sound out of most speakers. Not exactly ideal, but it should work. What you won't get is any real bass. The power from the headunit isn't going to yield much bass at higher volume levels. That's one big difference between Sony and your better units like Alpine or Pioneer. Sony's builtin amps are not very strong.
